Austria
Being the homeland of the finest and most celebrated classical composers, the Austrian Embassy presented its Grand Decoration for Honour to Canadian music critic Jean-Jacques Van Vlasselaer for his writing on Sept. 28.
Australia
The Australian High Commission tried to throw what was likely to be the final garden party of the year on Sept. 27 at the high commissioner’s residence in Sandy Hill. Due to unco-operative weather, the party stayed indoors.
Serbia
The Embassy of Serbia held a get-together on Sept. 23 to celebrate the life of Milutin Milankovic, a pioneering Serbian scientist who invented the leap year, and was among the first in the world to study changes in the global climate.
Saudi Arabia
The Embassy of Saudi Arabia celebrated their country’s national day in style on Sept. 23 at the Casino du Lac Leamy.

Croquet
British High Commissioner Anthony Cary held an exclusive croquet match at historic Earnscliffe on Sept 17. Invitations were restricted to alumni of British universities.
Mexico
The Mexican Embassy sure didn’t disappoint with its highly anticipated National Day party at the National Gallery on Sept. 15. Between live music, dancing and tequila tasting, all had a blast.
Lebanon
Members of Ottawa’s Lebanese community were overwhelmed Sept. 20 when the much-loved Sheikh Sami Amin Gemayel stopped in for a dinner.
Chile
The Embassy of Chile held a national day reception at the Chateau Laurier on Sept. 17.

Brazil
The Embassy of Brazil threw a rocking national day party at the Crowne Plaza on Sept. 9. With hundreds of Brazilian guests, plus a live band, the packed reception quickly turned into a dance party.
Revolutionary Art
The Embassy of Mexico held a vernissage on Sept. 10 for an exhibit of photography from Revolutionary Mexico, which is on display at the World Exchange Plaza.
Czech Republic
Staff at the Czech Embassy celebrated their departing and newly-arrived counsellors on Sept. 10.
Peru Free Trade
The Embassy of Peru celebrated the coming into force of the Canada-Peru free trade, labour and environment agreements at a well-attended party on Sept. 14.
Turkey
The ambassador of Turkey held a charming going-away party for his departing counsellor, Tugrul Biltekin, at his Rockcliffe residence the evening of Sept. 10.
Iftar
The Muslim holy month of Ramadan was celebrated by the National Press Club of Canada Foundation at the Sheraton on Sept. 8. Guests met to break the day’s fast and to listen a speech by Tony Burman, managing director of Al-Jazeera English.

Dominican Music
The Embassy of the Dominican Republic hosted a classical music concert on Sept. 4 at the Library and Archives.
Dead Aid
Development watchers flocked to the Chateau Laurier on Sept. 8 to hear a speech by Zambian author Dambisa Moyo. Thanks to Ms. Moyo’s provocative views, expressed in Dead Aid: Why Aid is Not Working and How There is a Better Way For Africa, the show was sold out.

Trinidad and Tobago
The High Commission of Trinidad and Tobago held two events to celebrate the country’s national day this past week. On Aug. 29, a party was held at the high commissioner’s residence, and on Aug. 31 they hosted a reception at Ottawa City Hall for Trinidadian-born Canadian Olympic gold medal winner Glenroy Gilbert.
Macedonians Tour the Hill
A high-powered delegation of Macedonian political leaders visited Canada last week, and were received on Parliament Hill by the speakers of the House and Senate Aug. 27.
