Just fresh from a sailing mishap that nearly cost him his life, an Ottawa man this week
paid a courtesy call on U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins (right) to thank the U.S. Coast
Guard for saving his life. Rudy Snel (left) and three colleagues were rescued on May 7
after their boat capsized when it ran into stormy weather off the North Carolina coast.
The ordeal lasted almost eight hours before they were rescued. "At one point, I figured
we were as good as dead and just sat there watching the waves," said Mr. Snel, his voice
breaking yesterday at the U.S. embassy where he delivered a letter to Mr. Wilkins, asking
him to forward it to the Coast Guard crew who saved him. -Brian Adeba
