Cuba
The Embassy of Cuba hosted a celebration on Oct. 23 to mark the Cuban Day of Culture.
France
Champlain’s Dream, a book by American historian David Hackett Fischer, was the subject of a discussion at the French Embassy on Oct. 22. The in-depth biography looks at Samuel de Champlain’s motivations for exploring and his unique relationship with Canada’s First Nations people.
Austria
Ambassador Werner Brendstetter celebrated Austria’s national day the evening of Oct. 26 with a reception at his residence.
Hungary
The Embassy of Hungary hosted a concert at Ashbury College, featuring some young local prodigies, on Oct. 22, to commemorate the country’s national day.

New Zealand
The New Zealand High Commission held a party on Oct. 5 for their visiting minister of foreign affairs, sport and for the Rugby World Cup.
Spain
The Spanish Embassy celebrated the country’s national day with an afternoon reception at the residence on Oct. 13.
Yemen
The Embassy of Yemen and Ottawa University's Arabic studies department teamed up Oct. 13 to showcase 'The Queen of Sheba,' recent works by Yemeni artist Mazher Nizar. The spotlight that night was also on Donna Kennedy-Glans, author of the new book Unveiling the Breath: One woman's journey into understanding Islam and gender.
Libya
The Embassy of Libya celebrated the country’s national day with a reception at the National Gallery on Oct. 13.
Iraq
Diplomats, academics and businesspeople from around the world gathered on Parliament Hill last week for a special two-day conference on Iraq. The evening of Oct. 14, they gathered at the Rideau Club for a dinner hosted by Iraqi Ambassador Howar Ziad.

Happy Diwali!
Some of the government's most influential ministers gathered in Parliament's West Block on Oct. 8 to celebrate the beginning of Diwali, the annual 'Festival of Lights' celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains.
Argentina
The Embassy of Argentina hosted a vernissage at the University of Mexico extension school in Hull on Oct. 1, showcasing an exhibit of work by Argentine painters living in Canada.
Azerbaijan
Formerly his country’s chargé d’affaires, Farid Shafiyev has been promoted, and is now Azerbaijan’s ambassador in Ottawa. After he presented his credentials Oct. 2, he held a celebratory reception at the Westin Hotel.

NAC Gala
Music lovers and high-society types alike flocked to the National Arts Centre on Oct. 3 for a special fundraising evening that featured performances by famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma and, surprisingly, Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
China
Chinese Ambassador Lan Lijun attracted some of Ottawa’s most influential Canadians to a reception on Sept. 30, held to mark the 60th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.
Korea
The Embassy of Korea attracted hundreds of diplomats, Korean War veterans and others to a noontime national day reception at their embassy Oct. 2.
Germany
The Germans celebrated their Day of Unity with a large and well-attended reception at the ambassador’s residence Sept. 30.
Russia
The Russian Trade delegation held a farewell reception Sept. 29 for Dmitry Bystrov, their departing trade commissioner, who is heading back to Moscow.
New Zealand
17. The multi-tasking New Zealand Foreign Minister, Murray McCully, who is also their minister for sport and for the Rugby World Cup, made a stop in Ottawa on Oct. 5 to meet with Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon as well as a number of other Canadian officials.
Malaysia
The High Commission of Malaysia celebrated the country’s national day Sept. 29 with an evening garden party complete with a full Malaysian buffet.
Estonia
The Embassy of Estonia hosted a five-day art exposition at the Cube Gallery in Westboro for the Society of Estonian Artists in Toronto. The exhibition, which features 43 artists from Canada, the US, Sweden and Estonia, kicked off with a reception Oct. 2.
