Party Time for January 9, 2008

Winter Sports
It was an active week of winter sports for diplomats and their spouses. The Diplomatic Hospitality Group put their best feet forward at the Malaysian high commissioner’s residence on Jan. 25 as guests tried out the ancient Canadian art of snowshoeing. The next day, the Ottawa Diplomatic Association, the Slovenian Embassy and the Office of Protocol helped everyone strap on their skis for a day on the powdery slopes at Camp Fortune.
10 Years of the ODA
The ODA celebrated its 10th anniversary on Jan. 23 with a speech by Canadian deputy minister of International Trade Marie-Lucie Morin, followed by a reception.

The Indonesian Embassy launched the first National Asian of the Year award at a reception on Jan. 16.
Slovenia
The Slovenian embassy celebrated taking over the EU presidency with a concert and reception on Jan. 16.
Iceland
Diplomats from the Nordic countries and members of Ottawa's Icelandic community came together Jan. 17 to honour a great Canadian naturalist. Dr. Jack Ives, a geographer, has conducted decades of research on Iceland’s Skaftafell glacier and even had a hand in making the place a national park. For his efforts he was recently inducted into Iceland’s Order of the Falcon.

On Dec. 18, the embassy of Romania held an exhibition entitled “Romanian Cultural Dimensions,” featuring works of art in glass and textiles by two Romanian artists.

Bahamas High Commissioner Philip Smith bade farewell to his colleagues and friends in Ottawa with a reception on Dec.19. He and his family returned to the Bahamas just before Christmas.
Twelfth Night
Federal Green Party leader Elizabeth May opened her home on Jan. 6 for her annual bash celebrating the last evening of the holiday season. An eclectic mix of Green activists, personal friends, kids, reporters and diplomats bumped elbows and crowded the house. Ms. May personally served home-cooked appetizers and topped up the punch, mixed according to her great-grandfather’s recipe. Commenting on the unique ambiance, Ms. May quipped: “It feels like real life!”
