Rick Hillier's legacy remains uncertain

The rank and file loved him and the Prime Minister's Office feared him, but no one within Canadian military circles can deny that former chief of defence staff Rick Hillier left an indelible mark on the institution.

Appointed by the Liberal government in 2005, Hillier was instrumental in convincing Paul Martin to commit Canada to a larger role in the Afghanistan mission.
