For Brig.-Gen. Denis Thompson, still darkly tanned from 10 months of commanding Canadian and NATO forces in treacherous Kandahar province, the biggest thorn in his side during his time in Afghanistan was the Taliban, who claimed the lives of 25 Canadian boys under his watch.
