In an effort to bring an end to Canada's commercial seal hunt, American animal rights activists have instituted a boycott on Canadian seafood products they claim has cost the Canadian economy hundreds of millions of dollars since 2005.

But provincial and federal officials, and a handful of third-party studies, reject this claim, accusing the boycotters of intentionally inflating their numbers and misleading the public.
