In July 2007, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that a re-engagement with Latin America would be a top priority for his government. Prosperity, security and democratic governance would be the pillars of that engagement, he said, and the Department of Foreign Affairs proceeded to launch an Americas Strategy.
