In July 2000, with the clock ticking down towards the end of his presidency, Bill Clinton attempted what so many of his predecessors had also tried but failed to do: secure Middle East peace.

Invitations were sent to Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, and the three leaders gathered at the US president's Camp David mountain retreat to hash out the issues.
