Foreigners to fill diplomatic void

Fort Pearson staff will be cut and savings used to hire locally-engaged staff.

A government promise to deploy more Canadian diplomats to the country's embassies and missions around the world will instead see hundreds of positions cut at headquarters and replaced with foreigners hired where the missions are located.

Critics of the government say Canada is contracting out its diplomacy, although a former deputy minister says the high cost of sending people abroad makes it difficult to justify more foreign postings...
