Blackfire case put CSR bill back in limelight

Advocates say cases show C-300 is needed, but opponents say they are two isolated incidents.

With employees of a Canadian mining company charged in the murder of a Mexican environmental activist and human rights complaints being lobbed against another Canadian firm operating in Guatemala, supporters of a new bill advocating corporate social responsibility for Canadian mining companies abroad say the incidents reinforce the need for such legislation.

To argue that we don't need oversight and recourse because there are just a few bad apples is nonsense. For public officials to make that argument makes me wonder if they are truly defending the public interest, which is their first duty as elected or appointed officials of the Crown. One bad apple perhaps doesn't spoil the whole bunch, but we know that the competition for profits, and the blight of greed, can go far in spreading one bad apple's rot to the rest. Does the fiasco of the financial sector ring any bells? Really, just a few sub-prime mortgages, what harm could that do?
