Liberal minority dealt its first legislative defeat

Late Tuesday afternoon, Bills C-31 and C-32, the pieces of legislation that were to formalize the division of trade from foreign affairs in Canada's federal government, were defeated before they could reach committee. It was the first defeat of proposed legislation at second reading for the current Liberal minority government, and was immediately hailed as a signal of opposition discontent.
