Elected yesterday afternoon is Pope Benedict XVI - the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, a German whose reputation as the Vatican's most influential conservative won him the feared title, "the Hammer" among liberal Catholics and liberation theologians.

Yet his friends and supporters, including Calgary Bishop Fred Henry, say he is far more conciliatory and compassionate than his reputation suggests....
