Shashi U. Tripathi, India's High Commissioner to Canada, is often asked why she decided to join the foreign service in 1970. She says of her decision, "It was an unusual profession for a woman at the time, when the professions open to us were mainly medicine and teaching. Here was this profession that was opening up. It was a man's field, and you had to compete. But, if you made it, it opened up very interesting opportunities....
