![]() | >Dear Ray: I can't comment on the hetlah club issue, but I did want to say that I think medical refugee is something of a misnomer. While it's true many US patients feel they have no choice but to flee abroad for care, it's also the case that many un- and underinsured patients seek treatment overseas simply because it's better, or because procedures that are offered in Europe and Asia are not available in the United States (such as the popular Birmingham Hip Resurfacing procedure). Many Americans are heading overseas out of choice, not desperation. |

A true refugee is a person who is in danger and the bad guys are right behind him or her so that refugee bangs on the first door and cries out to be let in claiming sanctuary, an ancient and humane tradition. We have regugees who travel through several other nations, some of them our NATO allies, some members of OAS, almost all of them signatories of the UN agreement on refugees, and sometimes over a period of years, to bang on our door. Should we be members of NATO, the UN or the OAS if they are dangerous or evil nations from which we accept people on the run? Should Canadian companies be allowed to do business with these bad nations? How long should one be away from one's native country to still be a refugee, a month, five years? We only have a border with the USA and we are turning back regugees from their imperial wars. What is the rational in that, as people have been fleeing wars for thousands of years? If we have dead Canadians and billions of dollars invested in a war in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, should we accept regugees from there who will not stay and fight for their own country while we are being encouraged to do so?
